Some spotting and light browning to the upper edge of some pages. 11 x 17 cm. Original brown cloth. Spine with black lettering and leaf design head and tail decoration. Lower board embossed with central floral motif, cornerpieces and ruled borders. Upper board with central reverse gilt lettering panel surrounded by proprietary Houslton & Sons Industrial Library embossed black decoration and lettering within ruled borders. Very mild handling to the reasonably bright publisher's cloth binding overall. Includes "cooling drinks for balls and routs" and sections on candy, "crack and caramel", lozenges, ices, chocolate, compotes &c. The advice over 140 years ago was that "all parents or guardians who wish to place lads out to learn the business to apprentice them at some good shop."
