Book Condition: Good

[xvi], 341 printed pages. Ink owner's stamp on preliminary page ("W.H.BALDOCK, 64, Sandbrook Road., Stoke Newington, N."). Worming affecting margins of last six leaves and the rear paste-down endpaper. 14 x 21.5 cm. Original green cloth-backed boards, front board with photograph of the library within double ruled border and lettering (slightly creased, age toned & worn at the edges), rear board with engraved vignette illustration of removal container loaded onto a freight wagon. The catalogue includes the works of Daniel Defoe, Mary Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft, & Anna Barbauld, all of whom lived in the close neighbourhood. But it does not list any of the books of Joseph Conrad who was a resident of Dynevor Road, Stoke Newington and had a brief stay in a hospital in Dalston to recuperate from his travels to the Congo. If his descriptions of London are anything to go by, he wasn't a huge fan of the city, finding it a land of utter savagery with the East End being unadorned by grace or splendour. The Grade II listed Stoke Newington Library was built in 1892. Stoke Newington Library is recognised by Heritage England as a great example of a late Victorian public library & is due to be refurbished to maintain it with a £4.5 million Hackey Council investment. No copies located in Copac nor WorldCat. The only copy located is fittingly in Hackney Reference Library. Bookseller Inventory # 5012
