MANUEL ALVAREZ BRAVO was the most significant figure
in the history of Mexican photography and one of the fore-
most practitioners of visual arts in the twenticth century.
This major retrospective documents and celebrates his
life's work.
Over 360 sumptuous tritone photographs-including more
than 20 previously unpublished images-span Alvarez
Bravo's remarkable eighty-year career. Strikingly lyrical
and richly resonant, the collection includes celebrated and
iconic images as well as undiscovered masterpieces. The
work encompasses landscapes, urban and rural scenes,
nudes, still-lifes, and religious and vernacular subjects, as
well as portraits of luminaries such as Diego Rivera, Frida
Kahlo, and Octavio Paz. Above all, Alvarez Bravo's work
celebrated his love for Mexico-its modern landscape as
well as its age-old indigenous rituals.
Essays by internationally renowned writers Carlos Fuentes,
John Banville, and Jean-Claude Lemagny explore the
poetry in Alvarez Bravo's photography and contextualize
his work in the cultural milieu of his time. In addition, a
chronology incorporating exhibition history and a moving
preface by Alvarez Bravo's widow, Colette Alvarez Urbajtel
complete the monograph, making this the definitive monument to a true master of modern photography.
