WorldCat locates 4 copies of four other editions worldwide, but none for this scarce 1914 edition.  Professor Hoffmann was the pen name of Angelo John Lewis (1839–1919), a successful London barrister and journalist - chosen because practicing law was a serious profession; publishing books on magic, puzzles, and parlour games under his real name would have tarnished his legal reputation. By the start of the Great War, the British middle class had growing disposable income and evening leisure hours leading to a healthy commercial market for home entertainment manuals. Lewis took advantage, pivoting from law to a highly lucrative literary career as a key domestic authority on home amusements.
