The Plague is Hasenclever's 2nd screenplay & the first film text that was printed in book form. One of a small number of Expressionist plays that was adapted for cinema. Die Pest is divided into 151 film scenes; it implies camera distance and employs the montage technique used a few years later by Mayer and by Eisenstein. It is a sci-fi dystopia set in 2000 about a united European Union, where poverty has been solved through nutritional advances. However deadly disease spreads from cruise liners to spread rapidly through the world population. A mad rush to discover the vaccine includes a banker trying to cash in on the situation. A number of other scenes of montage focus on the pandemic, the increasing wealth gap, and political and financial chaos before total destruction of the world when an asteroid collision wipes out all life.
