First volume describes the doll house designed by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens which was made as a gift to Queen Mary of England in 1924. The Dolls' House was packed in 45 wooden cases for transportation, and exhibited in the 'Palace of Arts' at the British Empire Exhibition, conceived by the British Government to boost public morale in post-war Britain. It is a one-twelfth replica of a Royal palace, to which 1,500 artists and manufacturers gave their miniature contributions, and is now housed at Windsor Castle. The second volume describes the library and includes facsimiles and specimen pages of books and paintings made expressly for the doll house by Rudyard Kipling, Arthur Conan Doyle, A.A. Milne and others. The library includes 132 printed books, newspapers, or magazines. Many of these had already been published, and were gifts sent in by donors, approved by Lutyens to ensure they were of the correct scale.
