New Testament. 14 engraved plates facing pages 10, 25, 52, 58, 74, 93, 122, 127, 143, 151, 173,218, 221 and 247. The earliest issue, without an imprint on p.256, and with parentheses enclosing the page numbers. Old glue residue on inner hinges of frontispiece and first title-page. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Ink inscription on verso of front free endpaper dated 1934. 30 x 45 mm. Later full red morocco believed to be by L.G. Challenger. Central gilt Shakespearean coat of arms to both covers; Spine with 12 horizontal gilt lines, gilt 'Bible',& 'Newberry 1780' and three gilt hand-tooled decorative motifs. Complete with leather bound purpose-built bible box with blind stamped matching heraldic covers; spine gilt ruled 'Newberry bible' titled and with four oval decorative gilt stamps. Upper cover simply repaired down split hinge. Very slightly rubbed with small old split on front cover. Encased in a specially-made paste paper storage box whose design mimics the binding, stamped and tooled in gilt; front and
back boards blind-stamped; front panel detached. Slight erosion to edges of first three leaves, all endpapers present, binding tight and secure. A good to good+ copy. First published by W. Harris in 1771 and reprinted in 1778 by J. Harris, this London 1780 edition printed for Elizabeth Newbery, publisher, includes engraved title pages for both the entire volume and the New Testament, and an additional fourteen engraved plates. The 256-page text of brief biblical summations includes scriptural references for each of
the adaptations. A note on the binding: this is a variantn on-contemporary binding with a herald stamped front and back on the panels, and on the box in which the volume is enrobed. The herald, with a helmet above two spurs, the spurs positioned both dexter and sinister, may refer to the Order of the Golden Spur, a papal order of knighthood conferred upon those who have rendered distinguished service in propagating the Catholic faith, or who have contributed to the glory of the Church.
