Excellent condition. Copper-plate engraving. Extremely light age toning. Hoizontal fold. Small marginal tear not affecting image. 315mm x 207mm. Other spellings of Philipp Cluver include Cluverio and Cluverius. Many of his maps were engraved by Peter Bertius-this is unsigned. 1738 is an estimated date but this map appears to have been published pre-1750. An interesting map of Malta, Southern Sicily & part of the Mediterranean coast of Northern Africa showing Carthage and ancient Roman African provinces. It includes a very decorative title cartouche depicting a Roman solider, Roman palace,its inhabitants &, in the background, an attacking army watching a city burn. Clüver was a German geographer, who was given a special appointment at Leiden as geographer and in charge of the university's library, but his life's project was a general study of the geography, based not only on history & classical literary sources, but, and this was his ground-breaking contribution, supplemented by wide travels and local personal visits.
